Unbroken Chains Of Impulsivity

A youngster showed to me his $200  pair Jordans, minutes after the fact he disclosed to me he was trusting that his mom would discover a place to live since they were recently evicted. Maybe an issue with Impulse control? Maybe it’s conceivable that our rash conduct and our need to give off an impression of being fruitful open our lives to poverty and poor decision? I believe we are suffering from unbroken Chains of Impulsivity.

We have often used Jordans in the Black Community as a socio-economic talking point for over 40 years.Trying to convince people that they don’t need these shoes. However the argument has not worked, disenfranchised youth and adults still buy these shoes.  Jordans are and will always be a staple of poor people of living a good life in tough economic conditions. What we have discovered as a community that regardless if a single mother is living on a fixed income she is going to buy her child these overpriced shoes when she has money. Her socioeconomic standing in the community does not match the psychology of why there is an impulse of purchasing a shoe that has very little value. Just maybe oppressed people have an addiction, need, or impulse to look like they are doing good even when they know that they are oppressed and doing poorly.

Chains Of Impulsivity

See Impulse control is a mental disorder that controls a person’s emotions and behaviors.  Research tells us that the lack of one self-control and impulsivity can create high levels of distress. Some of these levels of distress can be seen in our community today.  If we are honest, our community suffers from symptoms of criminal involvement and incarceration, low self-esteem, failure in academic and professional endeavors. These are some of the symptoms of impulsivity.  Here is the kicker,  research also suggests that environmental conditions play a key role in impulsivity. These facts have to lead me to ask  some powerful questions:

  1. What post-slavery conditions still exist that create an environment that produces a mental captivity of unbroken chains of impulsivity?
  2. How powerful is the socio-economic distress in the black community?
  3. What factors exist that can create an environment that produces free people who live as mental slaves. Chains Of Impulsivity

We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.– Marcus Garvey

Chains Of Impulsivity

Breaking the habit of Impulsivity is mental as well as a spiritual process. Romans 12:1-2 says:

1Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you.…

YHWH desires for his people to be free. He has created his people to worship him. Our communal impulsivity has to broken. The hurtful habit that keeps us as people bound to idols has to be destroyed.  There are five things that you can do today to start your process of breaking the Chains Of Impulsivity.  The bottom line is that an individual has to alter their thoughts about imprudent choices by doing the following:

  1. Get Back in Covenant with The Most High
  2. Stop Trying to assimilate into the Pagan Systems of the World.
  3. Renew your mind through the reading of the Torah.
  4. Find Your Purpose in The Most High, which is your true identity.
  5. Find out the will of God for your life.
